THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WELSH PLACE-NAME SOCIETY

In November 2010 Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd organised a place-name conference at Plas Tan-y-bwlch, Maentwrog. At the end of the conference a session was held to discuss the establishment of a Place-Name Society for Wales. The response was enthusiastic and it was agreed in principle to establish the Welsh Place-Name Society, with individuals being nominated to form a Steering Committee. The Society was established in an inaugural conference held in October 2011 at the National Library of Wales in conjunction with the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies.

We are extremely grateful to the National Library and the Centre for Advanced Studies for all their support in organising the conference in 2011. We are equally grateful to our colleagues in Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd who facilitated the arrangements at Tan-y-bwlch, where the seeds were first sown.
