The general aim of the Society is to:

• Promote the awareness, study and understanding of the place-names of Wales
• Consider the relationship between the place-names of Wales and the languages, landscape, history and culture of the country
• Protect the place-names of Wales

To achieve its aims, the Society also intends to:

• Support individuals and groups in recording, analysing and interpreting place-names
• Disseminate information about place-names
• Publish a newsletter about the place-names of Wales
• Maintain a website about the place-names of Wales
• Host an annual conference
